Methodology

How we measure brand health and identify leading indicators of decline

Composite Health Score

Each brand receives a composite health score from 0–100, updated weekly. The score aggregates five weighted dimensions that together capture the full picture of a brand's market position — from pricing discipline to community sentiment to management outlook.

35%

Discount Pressure

Measures the depth, breadth, and frequency of markdowns across all tracked retailers. A brand appearing at 40% off across SSENSE, END, and Mr Porter simultaneously scores poorly. We track both the average discount depth and the percentage of SKUs on sale vs. full price.

25%

Community Engagement

Reddit sentiment analysis across r/malefashionadvice, r/goodyearwelt, r/rawdenim, and brand-specific subreddits. We measure discussion volume, sentiment polarity, and engagement velocity (how quickly posts gain traction). Declining Reddit engagement often precedes declining sales by 2–3 quarters.

20%

Sale Frequency

How often a brand runs sales compared to its historical baseline and peer group. Brands that go from two sales per year to four — or that start appearing on flash-sale sites like 260 Sample Sale — are flagged. Off-cycle sales (outside the normal end-of-season cadence) are weighted more heavily.

10%

Management Sentiment

AI-analyzed SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q) for publicly traded parent companies. We extract management discussion sections and score them for language around inventory health, wholesale relationships, and pricing strategy. A shift from strong demand language to promotional environment language is a leading indicator.

10%

Qualitative Signals

Human observations including store closings, pop-up frequency changes, quality decline reports, unexpected collaborations (which can signal either creative vitality or commercial desperation), and Instagram engagement pattern shifts.

Red Flag Indicators

Certain patterns are especially predictive of brand health deterioration. When we detect these patterns, they trigger significant severity signals and heavily weight the health score downward.

Critical Patterns

First-Time Sale Appearance

When a brand that has never appeared on a multi-brand retailer's sale section suddenly does, it signals a fundamental shift in wholesale pricing strategy. This is often the first crack — once a brand permits markdowns, it rarely reverses.

Sale Frequency Acceleration

If a brand historically runs end-of-season sales twice a year but is now running a third mid-season event, or if sample sales are happening earlier than usual, it suggests excess inventory the brand needs to move. We compare current frequency against a 3-year baseline.

Off-Cycle Sample Sales

Sample sales occurring outside the traditional June/December windows — especially via platforms like 260 Sample Sale — indicate inventory that couldn't be cleared through normal wholesale channels. Multiple sample sales within a 6-month window is a strong negative signal.

Deepening Discount Depth

A brand going from 20% off to 40% off quarter-over-quarter, or appearing at deeper discounts than its tier peers. We track the month-over-month trend in average markdown percentage across all tracked retailers.

Cross-Retailer Markdown Convergence

When multiple retailers discount the same brand simultaneously, it suggests coordinated inventory clearance rather than an isolated promotional event. We flag brands appearing on sale at 3+ retailers in the same 2-week window.

Wholesale Channel Proliferation

Brands appearing at discount retailers (TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack) or on marketplace platforms they previously avoided. Once inventory enters these channels, it becomes extremely difficult to maintain brand positioning.

Historical Data Aggregation

Raw signals are only useful in historical context. We aggregate data across multiple time horizons to distinguish seasonal patterns from structural decline.

7-Day

Week-over-Week Change

The most granular view. We compare current-week health score against the prior week to surface fast-moving situations — a new sale launch, a viral Reddit thread, or a sudden markdown deepening. WoW changes of plus/minus 5 or more trigger alerts.

30-Day

Monthly Trend

Smooths out weekly noise while still capturing emergent patterns. We track the rolling 30-day average of discount depth, sale event count, and community engagement. This window catches brands that are slowly but consistently deteriorating.

90-Day

Quarterly Baseline

Establishes the seasonal norm. Fashion operates on a roughly quarterly cycle (pre-season, in-season, end-of-season, inter-season), so 90-day comparisons help us determine whether current behavior is within seasonal expectations or represents a break from pattern.

12-Month

Year-over-Year Comparison

The most important comparison for identifying structural shifts. Is the brand being discounted more deeply this March than last March? Is the sample sale happening earlier? Are Reddit mentions declining year-over-year? YoY comparison removes seasonal distortion entirely.

3-Year

Long-Term Trajectory

For brands with sufficient data history, we track the long-term arc. Brands that were never discounted three years ago but now routinely appear at 30% off have undergone a fundamental positioning change — even if any single quarter looks acceptable.

Scoring Thresholds

Healthy

75–100

Minimal discounting, strong community engagement, controlled distribution. The brand is maintaining its positioning and pricing power.

Watch

50–74

Emerging discount pressure, mixed signals. The brand may be entering a promotional cycle or experiencing softening demand. Monitor closely.

Stress

0–49

Significant discount activity, frequent or off-cycle sales, declining engagement. The brand is under material pricing pressure.
